Hoops in the Heights

Our community desires to have a shared green space that brings people together. Treadwell has a rich history of basketball and this project will reignite that legacy and create a healthy park for families and neighbors.

About the project

The Heights community has a deep history of basketball. Legends like Hank McDowell, Elliot Perry, and Penny Hardaway came out of Treadwell High School. When this high school closed it doors in 2009, the community suffered a loss of identity. There were no more Friday night games for the community to rally around. Now, there is a Middle School and Elementary School on the Treadwell campus. These schools and the campus are a central point to our community both geographically and sociologically. This project will re-ignite the rich history of basketball in our neighborhood by building two courts that will be accessible to the schools and community.  The re-establishment of these basketball courts is phase one of a comprehensive park improvement plan that is designed to create a centerpiece for community gathering. The Heights Coalition, which consists of neighbors, schools, businesses, churches, and stakeholders of the community, will work together in the planning and implementation of this project.

The Steps

1.     Heights Coalition gathers members to dream and brainstorm. (Feb 5)

2.     Form timeline, create committees, and establish ioby campaign. (Feb 10 – 23)

3.     Meeting weekly and do fundraising and outreach (Feb 23- March 31)

4.     Implementation (Mid-April)

Why we‘re doing it

In 2014 community stakeholders developed a neighborhood revitalization plan.  In this plan, the community voiced concerns and planned solutions to address safety, blight, and a need for shared community space.  The Hoops in the Heights project will provide a healthy opportunity for youth and families to recreate. It will allow kids who were previously playing in the streets to gather in a centralized community space.
