the project
We have a green space at Holy Names School that we are using to build a healthy garden for the community in Uptown (North) Memphis. We would like to teach the community how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables as well as build more raised beds to serve the community at hand. Those who come to work in the garden will earn their produce through sweat equity. The lessons they learn in the Holy Names garden can be taken home and applied towards their home gardens. This will help provide a sustainable model to feed the Uptown Memphis community.
the steps
We will be planting the following:
1. Turnip Greens: to plant in Raised Bed late Feb - early March
2. Collard Greens: to plant in Raised Bed late Feb - early March
3. Kale:to plant in Raised Bed late Feb - early March
4. Spinach: to plant in Raised Bed late Feb - early March
5. Broccoli: to plant in Raised Bed late Feb - early March
6. Cauliflower: to plant in late March - April
7. Cabbage: to plant in Raised Bed Feb - early March
8. Green Beans: Bush- to plant in Raised Bed in April
9, Tomatoes - large, not cherry & not grape: to plant in Raised Bed in April
10. Yellow Squash: to plant in Raised Bed in April
why we're doing it
Educating the children that our food comes from God and not from the grocery store is a very important part of our mission.
The plan is to have the children and their parents from the neighborhood involved as much as possible in every phase of preparing the garden, building the raised beds, planting the seeds and plants, and caring for the garden to get the best harvest possible.
Our goal is to give the children of the neighborhood and their parents, knowledge and experience in how to plan, plant & grow and care for their garden to achieve a bountiful harvest. We also want to help each of them and their families have access nearby to fresh vegetables, eat healthy foods and improve their own health all at the same time.

Planting seeds in trays now
Posted 03/03/2016 - 1:47pm
Students from Hutchinson & St. Louis schools are helping us start the summer plants. We have planted seed trays of: Broccoli, Cauliflower, Tomatoes, Yellow Squasg, Turnip Greens, Green Beans.
Our plan is to put these plants in raised beds by mid-April weather permitting.
We have seeds donated for herbs this year, so we will have a cherb garden with: Basil, Oregano, Chives, Parsley.
We have also started some Rosemary sprigs in pots.
We will have a major gardden cleanup on Sat Mar 12 at 10:00 AM. We need many volunteers for this task, much to do.
We currently have Greens ready for picking that are carry overs from Fall 2015, Spinach & Turnip Greens.
