About the project

Developed by the HER Collective in 2019, the HERoes Bruncheon was created after acknowledging a need to celebrate Black women—the everyday HERoes who are working to create real change within the Richmond community.

This year’s theme is “Take Your Cape Off: Redefining HERoism.” We invite attendees to step into a space of authenticity and unity. We encourage guests to shed the cape of everyday responsibilities and immerse themselves in a few hours of self-discovery and genuine engagement. The bruncheon is their time to be fully present, to connect with themselves, and to celebrate the strength of the remarkable community around them.

The HERoes Bruncheon aims to challenge the notion that heroism is limited to extraordinary acts and perfect portrayals. Instead, we celebrate the everyday heroines who make a difference in their communities, families, and personal journeys. We will celebrate 5 local HERoes, nominated by the local community, in five categories:

  • The Gamechanger Award celebrates the HERo who fearlessly navigates uncharted territories, recognizing that extraordinary achievements lie just beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones.
  • The Small Deeds, Big Impact Award honors the HERo who exemplifies the essence of sacrifice, empowerment, and love through their genuine acts of kindness.
  • The Life As You Climb Award is presented to the extraordinary woman who utilizes her privileges, resources, and wisdom to empower and equip the next generation of trailblazing women.
  • The Money Moves Award celebrates the HERo who not only speaks of change but actively invests in it. By leveraging her financial resources strategically, she creates opportunities, breaks barriers, and fosters sustainable progress.
  • Driven by a genuine care for others, the Sister's KeepHer Award celebrate the HERo who embodies the essence of selfless service, support and sisterhood.

The Steps

Preliminary steps have been completed, including booking the venue, speakers, and talent. We are finalizing the vendor market and decor.

Why we‘re doing it

We created the HERoes Bruncheon to celebrate Black women in our community who often go unrecognized. We saw how often the winners of major awards in our city didn't look like us — and we decided to create our own!
