About the project
The Hermiston Downtown District’s Beautification Committee is looking to create an inviting communal gathering space in the downtown courtyard located at 245 E Main St. Currently the courtyard functions only as a walkway. The committee would like to create a parklike space open to the public. We plan to add seating and greenery in the form of benches and shade trees in the central area of the courtyard. The furniture chosen for the courtyard will match the style planned for the Festival Street on 2nd Ave to create continuity and a greater sense of place downtown. Creating a public, open, inviting space to socialize could encourage downtown visitors to stay longer and increase foot traffic.
The Steps
With the funds received from the campaign will go to seating and greenery for the courtyard. Park installation will begin in September 2017.
Why we‘re doing it
Hermiston’s Main Street has been a topic on social media, with our downtown merchants, in Economic Development Groups and most recently Hermiston’s Livability Committee. The Hermiston Downtown District believes this project would benefit the downtown revitalization greatly by offering new amenities, promoting economic growth and the spirit of entrepreneurship on Main Street.
Creating an attractive space downtown to socialize with seating and greenery is a way to cultivate the downtown we envision - a more livable, lively, and connected downtown that is a destination to eat, shop, and socialize. The courtyard can be a spot for shoppers to take a break while they sip coffee or downtown employees to enjoy a lunch outdoors. Creating a parklike space in the courtyard has both economic development and beautification benefits for downtown.
