About the project
HER Power was established as a charge for the Bedford Stuyvesant housing community in 2020 as a response to the devastation the pandemic has taken on an already strained NYCHA community. HER Power is a women’s empowerment project developed by two community advocates who saw an immediate need for resources that promote holistic well being across NYCHA developments. HER Power will serve as a community platform incorporating events and outreach initiatives by providing healing-centered resources, fresh and healthy food access and education, fitness classes, employment assistance and Self- Care women’s groups across Marcy and Tompkins houses
The Steps
HER Power will lead meetings from February 1, 2022 through July,15, 2022 building power and community among other female NYCHA residents. Sessions will focus on gathering feedback about residents’ suggestions for community engagement and improvement, and their interests in health and wellness. Meetings will also integrate themes of self care, goal setting, and resource navigation.
Why we‘re doing it
When we say holistic not only do we mean mind, body and soul but ways to become liberated from systemic stressors such as violence, lack of resources, and the impacts of COVID-19. Her Power aims to build strength and community among other female NYCHA residents. Through the engagement of these practices Her Power hopes to find ways to cope from trauma so that we as women can move towards individual and community healing, but become empowered as leaders.
