Once there was an ugly little space at the northwest corner of Charlton Street and Sixth Avenue. Then the neighborhood lobbied for something better. At its request, the Parks Department turned the site into a garden, with an agreement that local volunteers would plant and maintain it.

Charlton Plaza became a neighborhood gem through the work of Harry Schroder and other volunteers. But Harry is no longer able to manage the park. Without his loving touch, Charlton Plaza desperately needs an overhaul.

the steps

The Charlton Street Block Association will partner with The Horticultural Society of New York (The Hort) to ensure that Charlton Plaza is replenished, revived and maintained. They will replenish the soil, develop a cohesive design plan, plant new flowers and shrubs, professionally trim the existing shrubs, monitor all the plants and shrubs for diseases, and winterize the park each fall. The Hort has done an amazing job with Father Fagan Park. It can do an equally amazing job with Charlton Plaza.

Charlton Plaza can be beautiful again … a local park we all love and admire – if enough neighbors pitch in with contributions to make this happen.

Garden Installation:
Additions of perennials and small shrubs: (up to approximately 150 additional perennials and 30 shrubs such as
Japanese Forest Grass, bleeding heart, cranesbill Geranium, Brunnera, Hosta, Astilbe, Amsonia, Asclepias,
Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Agastache, Salvia, Rhododendron, nine bark, Ilex, oakleaf Hydrangea etc).

Garden Renovation:
Clean Up

  • Clean up all beds from any remaining debris
  • Expose cobblestone paths and garden bed edges
  • Soil preparation
  • Compost all beds
  • Mulch beds where necessary
  • Cut back any remaining established perennials
  • Transplant small shrubs, remove shrubs deemed unhealthy or unattractive
  • Prune existing small trees/shrubs

Installation/Renovation Total: $6645

Bi-Weekly Routine Maintenance (16 visits at $225/visit)
Mulching, Cultivating beds, Pruning, Weeding, Deadheading, Monitoring plants for pests/diseases

Fall Clean Up - Leaf removal in all garden beds and lawn, Cut back of all perennial material, Winter mulching, Divide and transplant perennials as needed

Maintenance Program Total: $4,550
