the project
El Puente Cycling Club is a youth bicycling club that seeks to spread the word about the mental, physical, emotional and environmental benefits of bicycling, particularly for urban youth and their communities. Members of the club attend El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice in Brooklyn NY and come from low income Latino and African American communities in north Brooklyn. For the past 4 years they have participated in bicycling activities that include safe riding workshops, a program that allows them to earn a bicycle while learning bike maintenance and repair skills, regular group rides of up to 60 miles, and work with city agencies and bicycling advocates to improve safe riding infrastructure in the communities where they live.
For each of the past 3 years members of El Puente Cycling Club have presented workshops at the annual Youth Bike Summit. Last year in Seattle WA they lead a workshop that presented data from surveys and research they conducted that highlighted the positive connection between bicycling and mental health, particularly for urban teens.
For the 2016 Youth Bike Summit in Minneapolis MN, club members will lead a community mural design and painting workshop titled Bike the Change You Want to See. They will lead participants in the creation of a mural depicting the personal, community, and environmental changes that happen through bicycling.
the steps
I am working with youth members of El Puente Cycling Club to prepare them to lead the workshops. This includes preparing workshop activities for the design and painting aspects of the project, including preparing visual reference materials, and practice in facilitating drawing and painting activities.
I am working with staff from the Youth Bike Summit host organization in Minneapolis, Cycles for Change, to coordinate logistics to complete the project. I am also working closely with Youth Bike Summit organizers in New York City for guidance and support.
why we're doing it
El Puente Cycling Club members seek to meet youth bicycle activists from other parts of the country to increase their understanding of how bicycling can be used as a catylist for positive change. They will use their expertise in mural design and painting as a way of encouraging dialogue and building bonds that will strengthen the national network of youth cyclists.
Youth cyclists have taken a lead nationally in addressing the impacts of car culture on global warming and the decline of youth health. Meeting and sharing their experience at this national forum will further empower the youth to make even greater changes in behaviors and infrastructure in their native places.
