the project
Harlem River Community Rowing (HRCR) has been offering free or low-cost rowing for New Yorkers for over ten years.
Now based in Inwood, we're continuing our mission of providing on-water recreational opportunities to those new to the sport and to experienced rowers eager to get on the water.
Covid-19 scuttled our 2020 rowing season, but we plan to be back on the water in 2021 with free introductory programming for beginners and recreational rows for novice and skilled rowers of all ages. Meanwhile, we must pay storage fees to protect our boats and equipment until it's safe to get back on the water.
the steps
“Help Float Our Boats” will assist HRCR in two big ways: help us cover the costs for our prolonged equipment storage, and underwrite our free programming in 2021. When you contribute, you can “adopt” a seat in one of our boats or join our cheering squad.
Thanks to the Partnerships for Parks initiative from NYC Parks and the City Parks Foundation, our initial $2,500 in contributions has been matched dollar for dollar. But we still have more to raise to give HRCR a financial cushion for 2021.
why we're doing it
Rowing offers a physically rewarding, low-impact, full-body workout as well as a great community activity for anyone who wants to get in a boat and pull an oar. Just ask any of our 350 participants who have joined us over the last three years:
- HRCR is truly a community resource, and it's been great to see both new and returning faces each week from all over the city.
- I live in Inwood, and it's so wonderful to walk out my door and be on the dock in less than 10 minutes. I met so many other people from my community.
- Now I'm completely hooked and can't wait to get back on the water!
- HRCR has done great work in bringing rowing to the community. I hope they will receive continued support from parks and from funders.
Rowing is for everyone! That’s what Harlem River Community Rowing is all about! Now you can be a part of it by adopting a seat for a season in our online fleet.
