the project

I am an extremely proud Clevelander, and I have shared this passion wherever I may have found myself to whomever would listen. Besides being an artist, I am also a Park Ranger. I have lived and worked all over the United States. And in all of these places I have spoken about how wonderful a city Cleveland is and preached about how much it offers. And every single friend who has visited me in Cleveland would always quickly come to the conclusion that " Wow Scott, you are right!! Cleveland is amazing!!"

I started and completed the first heART of Cleveland book while working at Grand Canyon National Park. Which may sound strange being in maybe the most beautiful place in the world, and focusing all of your creative energy on your hometown across the continent. But Cleveland sticks with people, it obviously has a huge place in my heart, and I feel that this is true for most of us no matter where we go. We all share a special pride being from this grungy, hard working town that really doesn't have the best reputation, but for those of us from here and know the true essence of Cleveland, don't care what anyone thinks and are especially proud of what we have in our hometown, and what Cleveland offers us in so many ways.

This book is meant to be a celebration of Cleveland. Looking through the eyes of its artists, we see through different lenses and viewpoints all of the great aspects of our city, from architecture to food to nature to its famous people, extraordinary cultural diversity, literary history, renowned artistic legacy, professional sports, vast musical heritage, absolutely everything about Cleveland can be experienced through the artists in this book. More than the first, this book will further confront some of the social and political issues facing not only Cleveland, but the world. No city is perfect, and this book doesn't shy away from some of the topics that need to be discussed that affect us all.

ALL artists from ALL racial and ethnic backgrounds will be featured in this book, celebrating Cleveland's diversity while working towards bringing us all together through art.

the steps

Work on this book is currently underway. Bringing hundreds of artists together for one project is quite challenging but everything is off to a great start and is ahead of schedule. Once money is in we will get the layout designed, books proofed and printed and distributed to libraries and bookstores throughout the region. The book will be publicized and marketed to make this as popular and as widely read as possible.

why we're doing it

As great as Cleveland is, like all cities in the world, we are facing social, economic and environmental challenges. This book gives EVERYONE a voice, through art, to speak their feelings and opinions on this issues. This book represents all of Cleveland! No matter your skin color, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion (or lack of) through art I believe that we can be one, and its through this book that I hope this idea is conveyed. Artists have been told that their piece can be anything that is on their minds and in their heart, whether it is positive or negative, relating to Cleveland. I hope that this will spur conversations about how we can do better as a society and to all live together in a more harmonious way.

Much of the art reflects various cultural backgrounds and beliefs. But again, its the overall subject of the city of Cleveland that I hope can bring us together as one. Cleveland is a great mix of cultures and backgrounds and it is this diversity that makes Cleveland so great. I feel that this book will reflect that perfectly.
