Youth driven project to make a safe soccer field for the community to use and unite around. The current space is worn down and unused. Our dream is to see it transformed for the benefit of the community.

About the project
We envision a beautifully renovated field that will bring community members together. There many teens in the area who are passionate about soccer, but currently use rundown parks and abandoned lots to play. These spaces are not safe or inviting and there are not adequate fields that are accessible for our community. For this reason, our youth began this project so that they might have a safe and secure field in their own community. For them, soccer has been the starting point for many of their friendships and the hope is that a new field would provide an opportunity for new relationships to form. The field has the potential to be a strong force for the betterment of our neighborhood. See the whole story here!
The Steps
The building/renovation of the field has already been approved by the Parks Department of the City. They have agreed to build the facility if we raise the funds. This will allow us to keep usage of the field primarily within our immediate neighborhood. Once we have the funds in hand, we will work with the city to finalize the design of the field and secure a contractor for construction. Our goal is to have the initial phases of design completed by Spring 2019 so that construction will be able to begin in Summer 2019.
Why we‘re doing it
The Park Ave neighborhood has a high percentage of low-income families. As a whole, it is not generally considered a safe or healthy neighborhood. Additionally, many residents lack adequate transportation. These factors paired with the lack of access to gyms or other physical health outlets makes it a challenge for residents to stay healthy. We see the soccer field as something that will promote physical activity in our community. Additionally, the field would be a source of pride for the community and inspire surrounding areas to take similar initiatives for their neighborhoods. We want to make our neighborhood a better place and encourage others to do the same.
