the project

GS Mutual Aid is a grassroots mutual aid network supporting the most vulnerable and at-risk members of our community during the COVID-19 crisis– immigrant and undocumented families. This sensitive work is being done by the community itself, neighbors supporting neighbors who have been left out of an oppressive system. We operate out of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

One hundred percent of donations to GS Mutual Aid are used to purchase groceries and basic supplies for vulnerable neighbors, and we feed around 2000 at-risk people per week. These donations allow for grocery distribution three times a week, and sometimes daily depending on need, from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. We also deliver over 400 donated hot meals a week to homebound families.

We are grateful for every contribution. Every dollar you give has a direct impact on the safety and well-being of our neighbors.

All of our volunteers are ordinary folks volunteering their time and effort. We are not a government agency or a non-profit. We are always looking for support through donations, volunteer help, and more. To get involved, please email gsmutualaid@gmail.com !

the steps

All of our grocery purchases are funded through the GS Mutual Aid Community Fund, which pools grassroots donations from our community and beyond. We’re spending an average of $4,000 every week and need to continuously raise funds to keep our mutual aid operation going.

Every dollar you give to the GS Mutual Aid Community Fund helps to keep our most vulnerable neighbors from going hungry. Your donations have a direct impact: they are used to fund purchases of food and essential supplies, and are spent within a matter of days after being received. GS Mutual Aid provides groceries AND prepared meals, and distributes them from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church along with delivering them to a neighbor’s door based on need.

why we're doing it

GS Mutual Aid was founded to directly support our most vulnerable neighbors during the COVID-19 pandemic- immigrant and undocumented families that cannot easily receive support any other way. The health and economic impacts of the virus have deeply impacted our communities- many people can't put food on the table- and we believe all people should have their basic needs met, and be treated with dignity and respect.

We see ourselves as part of a larger network addressing the enormous need created by the COVID-19 pandemic, while adapting to pressing needs that we see arise in our community. We want to make GS Mutual Aid sustainable through the long-term vision of community care. By donating our time and money, we are able to build the future we want to see together to support all members of our community.

Thank you, and all those who have supported us, for your contributions. Together we're helping build a more resilient community.
