the project

The Power of Girlhood has some amazing programs that we want to continue to support and grow. We want to continue to support our chapter at Wick Elementary School for 2-5 grade girls. We host several community wide programs such as All Girl June Meetup, International Day of the Girl, our Tweens Leadership Intensive in August. We like to keep all our programs free or low cost. We also host parent/mom’s groups. Additionally, we feed our 2nd and 3rd grade students hot and healthy meals during their session and we deeply desire to able to take our girls on field experiences and hands on projects such as art, science, and meditation.

why we're doing it

“The research…suggested that Latina and black adolescent girls may be more vulnerable to reproductive coercion and sexual violence. Nearly 15 percent of Latina adolescents and 15 percent of black adolescents reported sexual coercion in the previous three months, compared to about four percent of white adolescents.” The Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.”

According to a 2017 Georgetown Law Review, researchers found that black girls as young as 5 years old are already seen as less innocent, and needing less support, than white girls of the same age. This presumption led teachers and other authority figures to treat black girls as older than they are and more harshly than white female students, with the disparity being particularly wide for 10- to 14-year-olds.

(73% of Caucasian girls, 76% of African American girls, 74% of Hispanic girls), interest in some aspects of STEM is higher for African American and Hispanic girls.

POG provides on-site mentorship for schools, detention centers, small groups and faith-based institutions. It is devoted to developing participants through planning and facilitating social enrichment activities designed to fulfill the organization’s purpose by empowering, educating, and providing opportunities for social, educational, and cultural development among young and adolescent girls.
