About the project
Our city water system has nitrates, making our water unsuitable for human consumption. We are at the mercy of purchasing bottled water. With no grocery store or even a convenience store nearby, we wish for this to be a test-pilot project. Can a small year-round farmer’s market sustain itself and thrive? With a vacant downtown building, we aim to create a pop-up store to serve our 221 citizens in this community, especially those without transportation and the many who are aging in place.
The Steps
- Secure the building with rental
- Locate local producers and grocery store vendors
- Set up the pop-up location and be in business
Why we‘re doing it
We do this for a sense of community, with aging-in-place seniors and small children who have nowhere nearby to find a fresh, shiny apple or other basic groceries in our small town of Paxico, Kansas.
We do this because our city water system has an unhealthy level of nitrates, making it unfit for drinking. Our residents must travel beyond our town to purchase the basic necessity of bottled water.
We do this for those in our town who are without transportation and are unable to access the nearest supermarket, which is 30 miles away. In the heart of beef country with the highest and healthiest mineral count in its beef, the Flint Hills of Kansas is just 60 miles away from the Tall Grass National Park. In the middle of so much abundance, this should not be the case.
We are seeking to fund a farmer's market style grocery store to provide fresh produce, meats, and other basic necessities in a convenient location.
