About the project
11 local graffiti artists will be painting 11 garage doors on my family's building. In June we asked the neighborhood to identify the themes that represent the BVQ n'hood. Each of these themes will be painted at least once. I'm working with 2 established local graffiti artists to make this happen as well as the CDC. As a way of showing appreciation to the artists, I will provide all paint as well as bbq food (including vegan options), refreshments, and in the graffiti tradition, a DJ from local college station WCSB, spinning records! There will be additional activities to engage youth and elders. The goal is to improve the connection that neighbors have to my family's building so as to foster respect and empowerment which will hopefully deter future tagging of my family's building
The Steps
The project date is 09/19/2015, which will likely be before I get the funding. Executing will require getting draft drawings from participating artists, identifying each artists paint color choices (which is being supplied at wholesale cost by Kobra Paints), ordering the paint, getting approval from the neighborhood for the draft drawings and FINALLY preparing for the day of the event.
Why we‘re doing it
To reconnect the building to the neighborhood and vice versa. To foster creativity and beauty through what many consider an illegitimate art form and to show youth and others that art is all around us and gets made by real people everyday.
