the project

We are thrilled to announce we have reached our initial goal of $50,000! This will enable our expansion and the launch of the Alan A. Finder Internship.

All gifts above and beyond this goal will allow us to underwrite the internship on an ongoing basis. We are humbled by and deeply thankful for your continued support!

--------------------------------------------------------

Beginning this spring and summer, we’ll expand our innovative Mobile Market program to additional neighborhoods across New York City, starting with the Lower East Side, while introducing new career opportunities for staff and trainees, including the Alan A. Finder Internship.

Launched in 2020, our Mobile Market program brings affordable fresh food to underserved communities and paid work to homeless and formerly incarcerated staff and trainees.

Utilizing a prototype mobile vending kiosk, we operate pop-up markets at community partner sites, including farmers markets, municipal buildings, and healthcare facilities. These markets are stocked with fresh groceries and healthy grab & go meals we produce and package ourselves using recipes developed in collaboration with local chefs.

Building upon The Doe Fund’s 30 year history helping to break the cycles of unemployment, homelessness, and incarceration, the program also provides targeted paid work opportunities in the culinary arts, customer service, and small business management to graduates and participants of Ready, Willing & Able, The Doe’s Fund nationally-recognized transitional work program.

In 2021, we'll expand the program to additional neighborhoods, starting with the Lower East Side, bringing more fresh food and gainful work to New Yorkers in need. All funds raised in this campaign will go directly to supporting the costs of bringing the program to the Lower East Side.

In memory of Alan Finder, esteemed New York Times journalist, longtime champion of The Doe Fund, and father of Director of Good Food Works, Jason Finder, we will also introduce a new internship for high-performing graduates of Ready, Willing & Able’s culinary arts program.

The Alan A. Finder Internship will offer Ready, Willing & Able participants an opportunity to hone their skills and gain exposure to the fundamentals of small business management before embarking on the next steps in their careers.

the steps

With your support, we’ll expand to additional neighborhoods in early 2021, starting with the Lower East Side, and launch the Alan A. Finder Internship program.

We’ll continuously monitor program performance and refine our approach based on real time feedback from customers, employees, and community stakeholders.

Throughout this process, we’ll actively seek additional funding from private philanthropy, government, and community partners to further expand the program, bringing the model to as many New York City communities as possible.

why we're doing it

We believe that everyone deserves a good meal, a good job, a chance at a good life.

We believe that not just food and health, but also employment and health, are inextricably interdependent. We believe that one’s zip code ought not determine their income, their health outcomes, their life chances. We believe that the option to make the healthy choice, to invest in oneself, to live for the future, in food, work, and beyond, ought not be a luxury but a universal right.

We envision a day when every corner provides a path to employment, health, and wealth, and we believe in The Doe Fund’s proven ability to execute its vision, to turn bold ideas into powerful realities, to get the job done. Above all, we believe in the power of community; the power to solve problems collaboratively, to support and uplift one another, the power of a motivated group of caring individuals to each offer what they can and together create a brighter future.

As someone who believed deeply in the power of education and paid close attention to the needs of society’s most vulnerable, we also believe the establishment of an internship in his name is just the kind of memorial Alan would have wanted.

updates

Thank You!!!

Dear Donors,

I'm thrilled to report that our campaign has reached its goal!

Despite setting an ambitious target, we completed the raise in just 12 days. To date, we've collected $50,201 from 182 donors, and there's still plenty of time remaining for those still wishing to contribute.

This support will enable us to expand our healthy food and employment initiatives to new neighborhoods and establish the Alan A. Finder Internship for formerly homeless and incarcerated men working to build their careers.

I could go on about what this means to our program and those we serve, but I hope to stay in touch and will save that for another time.

Instead, I'd like to take this opportunity to reflect a bit on my father and what your incredible generosity means in the context of his life and legacy.

My father was an enigma.

On the one hand, he was about as typical as they come in the greater tri-state area; a suburban dad who loved the New York Giants, barbecue ribs, bluesy rock ballads, and family trips to the Jersey shore. In his latter years, he was even known to don a pair of plaid shorts from time to time.

On the other, he was an almost superhuman force of intellect and generosity. Though he was of course human and had his flaws, he maintained a child-like curiosity and razor-sharp wit his entire life, held a near-saintly regard for the well-being of others, and successfully fought the pull of most modern indulgences...chocolate desserts and Italian suits notwithstanding.

He elevated mentorship above self-promotion, modesty above opulence, and giving above receiving. He lived a principled and selfless life in an unrelentingly amoral and individualistic society.

But of course, you all know this already. His legacy of competence, compassion, and care is laced throughout a sea of your glowing remembrances.

What you may not know is that living in this way took its toll. There were times when he felt unappreciated, disrespected, unseen...times when the weight of living kindly in an unkind world got the better of him.

I have to believe these were mostly isolated moments, that on the whole, he felt loved by his friends and family, respected by his colleagues and peers, and appreciated by his collaborators and mentees. I know how much that reciprocity meant to him, how much it defined his very notion of a successful life.

Your generosity means a great deal to me. I can't thank you enough for what it will make possible for our program. But it's what it would have meant to him that makes it truly special.

Like my father, I find it far more comfortable to give than receive. It feels awkward to ask for help, a handout nonetheless, especially in the context of such a personal loss.

To share in this loss with you all, to recognize and appreciate its breathtaking scope, and to share in an effort to keep his memory alive on behalf of those in need is comforting beyond words.

Thank you for sharing in our common grief, for sharing in his life, and for sharing in our collective responsibility to offer a fairer future to those long banished to the fringes of the American experiment.

My father would be terribly embarrassed but deeply moved by the words and resources you all have so kindly offered in his memory. I too am moved, and I promise to do everything in my power to ensure your generosity is deployed to the utmost benefit of the men we serve.

I look forward to staying in touch as we continue the work of expanding Good Food Works and honoring a very special man.

I hope you'll do the same.

Thank you again,

Jason
