the project

This Giving Tuesday, consider helping the HOPE Program to bridge the digital divide by providing #TechForHOPE.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, access to technology is critical in providing New Yorkers access to jobs, education, healthcare, and social connection.  Up to 44% of low-income households lack proper access to computers and the internet, which makes it extremely difficult to work from home or participate in remote schooling during the pandemic.  The HOPE Program aims to bridge that gap through #TechForHOPE by providing critical access to technology to communities hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABOUT HOPE

HOPE empowers New Yorkers to build sustainable futures through comprehensive training, jobs, advancement and lifelong career support. In 2020, we launched an innovative remote program to upskill long-term and newly unemployed New Yorkers and meet families’ wellness, financial, and career needs.

the steps

INVEST IN NEW YORKERS’ DIGITAL FUTURES

In order to ensure that under-resourced families can reach HOPE and other essential services remotely, HOPE’s budget for Bridging the Digital Divide has grown by 115%, from $270,000 to $573,000.

Opportunities to invest include:

  • $27 allows us to safely deliver technology to jobseekers while maintaining social distance
  • $41 provides critical accessories and software licenses
  • $108 provides an hour of digital literacy support
  • $220 gives a family a Chromebook
  • $370 provides a jobseeker with an entire digital package (Chromebook, hotspot, wifi plan)
  • $2,160 hires a young New Yorker to serve as a tech genius supporting other New Yorkers

Note that these amounts are exemplary of the costs within our technology program.  HOPE reserves the right to allocate funds as needed within the distribution of technology to New Yorkers in need.

why we're doing it

27% of households lack broadband internet and 17% do not have a computer. These rates increase to up to 44% for those facing socioeconomic barriers, such as poverty, homelessness, and lack of education. In fact, low-income communities of color - also the most vulnerable to the impacts of COVID-19 - are least likely to have access to technology. For these families, bridging the digital divide leads to:

JOBS

An unemployed person with home internet will be employed 7 weeks faster than one who does not, and will earn more than $5,000 in additional income annually, leveraging 15 times over our investment of digital equipment.

EDUCATION

In-home computer access leads to success in remote (and in-person) learning among schoolchildren. Middle- and high-income students are more than twice as likely as their low-income peers to have computer access.

HEALTH

Internet connection and access to telehealth have been proven to reduce mortality rates and save lives, particularly for our most vulnerable neighbors.

CONNECTION

During the pandemic, internet access is essential to reach loved ones remotely, which reduces social isolation, loneliness, and early mortality.
