Girls Making Change is a fellowship program serving high school girls of color in Senate District 1 over the course of a 16-week community and political leadership curriculum from June to October 2020. Through a series of leadership and skill building sessions, shadowing of women of color elected officials, and a community action project, the Change Fellows will develop a better understanding of community and justice issues, as well as ways to be civically engaging towards change. This program is sponsored by the Mary Turner Center for Advocacy.

  • Develop social justice leadership, confidence, and identity empowerment skills through weekly informational and interactive sessions

  • Shadow women of color elected officials in Michigan during their Capital Day Visit in Lansing, Michigan

  • Develop and work on a community action project that they facilitate to address a community issue that they choose to focus on

  • Understand the legislative process and turn an idea into a bill to address a problem in the community

why we're doing it

The long-term goal of the “Girls Making Change” Fellowship is for more representation of women of color in Detroit and Michigan in our government and in public policy.

$18,000 to develop a program that will:
