the project
The GIFT garden (Greenpoint Interfaith Food Team) is a volunteer project to provide fresh produce for the hungry in the community. Our group was founded as an interfaith project in 2009 by volunteers from Greenpoint Shul and Greenpoint Reformed Church. The Garden has enjoyed two successful seasons at the Shul providing fresh organic vegetables for the food pantry and soup kitchen at the Greenpoint Hunger Program. This coming winter the Garden is looking to expand, by forging links with other faith communities, finding new spaces which can be re-purposed into gardening plots, and recruiting new volunteers who want to get their hands dirty and grow some food!
If you would like to know more about the project or if you have any suggestions for the volunteers please get in touch via Facebook, email or telephone.

the steps
This winter we’re looking forward to enhancing the infrastructure of the garden with additional raised beds and cold frames and greenhouses. This will help us extend our growing season and help us produce even more fresh food for the needy of the community. Although the Garden is for the most part self financing we are hoping to raise $500 through donations to help pay for the additional lumber, plastic and soil needed.
why we're doing it
With the additional infrastructure the Garden will be able to provide much more produce for the Greenpoint Hunger Program.
budget
Plant food $20 12 tomato metal spiral frames $ 15 Bug spray /anti itch cream $20 ( we have severe mosquito problems ) Seeds $15 Potting soil for transplants $20 Tarpaulin $15 Seed tray starter kits $20 Soil nutrient test kits $20 Mesh netting $20 Misc expenses $35 ( fliers to promote our events, snacks for volunteers, anything we didn't think of ahead of time) This comes out to $200, allowing us $320 to spend on plastic and soil project total= 520 ioby fee = 42 I would estimate that $110 will be needed for plastic that will be used to build the cold frames in October ( we have had beams of lumber already donated frpom the Greenpoint Reform Church ) and $213 for much needed additional soil.

Sunday, April 29th, 2012 from Noon to 4 pm.
I hope you can come out and join us get the Gift garden ready for the summer season. We can use some help to build the remaining raised beds. To clear away all of last year's vegetation and turn the soil. We will also be adding the new soil we are purchasing this week ( along with fertilizer and plant food ) to fill in the existing raised beds. The rows in between the beds need to be cleared of weeds and debris from the past winter. Along with some other minor things that need to be take care of.
