About the project
Our overall goal is to develop, improve and apply polices and practices that create sustainable housing options in The Old Pueblo. We want to address the impacts of gentrification, appropriation and displacement in downtown Tucson area neighborhoods and barrios.
The Steps
We are holding a facilitated community meeting on Sept. 15, 2018 to hear concerns from the community. We will then spend the next few months attending downtown area neighborhood and barrio meetings to continue to gather information. Once we have a consensus on what are the most important areas to focus on, we will have an additional community event in early 2019. At that event we will bring together government employees, developers, and community members to see what kinds of policy changes can be put into place to mitigate these impacts on current residents.
Why we‘re doing it
Gentrification is a huge issue and it is impacting current residents in the downtown Tucson area - either pricing people out of these neighborhoods, or increasing taxes so that long-term residents have difficulty staying in their houses. We want to work on policy changes to ensure the downtown area neighborhoods and barrios are for everyone, not just those with a lot of money.
