About the project
We are purchasing 15 bikes to promote fun alternatives to traditional exercise, bike safety, and community. We will continue to host youth centered bike rides, promote the concept of shared streets and the benefits of being physically active.
The Steps
1. Partner with the local recreation department, pre-existing bike groups (adults) and transportation advocacy group
2. Reach out to attendees from previous events to gain support
3. Decide on a target neighborhood to initiate the project
4. Purchase bikes
5. Schedule bike ride
Why we‘re doing it
In New Orleans, there are a plethora of social rides. However, none of the rides are teen focused. Last year, we hosted 4 community bike rides that targeted teens and their families. The response was great. However, the following challenges were presented: 1. youth desired to learn to ride, but no bikes were available; 2. youth didn't have access to a functional bike; 3. bike education was available, but bikes were limited; and 4. The importance of bike infrasture was difficult to convey
