About the project

We organize a free, self- guided tour of private gardens, community gardens and urban farms in different neighborhoods of Cleveland. Our goal is to encourage visitors to explore Cleveland and get to know its residents and to see how much "greening" is going on in the city. There are many abandoned properties and vacant lots in Cleveland which have been turned Into orchards, vineyards, farms and gardens.

The Steps

  1. Decided on a date: June 22 and 23, 2013
  2. Recruit garden finders for neighborhoods that want to be on the walk. Invite gardeners to apply online. Anyone who wants to can be on the walk.
  3. Raise funds.
  4. Develop marketing materials, design for poster and postcards, update website use Facebook.
  5. Logistics committeee recruits volunteers and find headquarters for each neighborhood.
  6. Design and print the Guide with maps for the walk.
  7. Distribute guides throughout NE Ohio.
  8. Day of walk, gather data about visitors, number, zip codes, feedback.

Why we‘re doing it

An environmental problem that GardenWalk is attempting to address is to change flight from the city and the subsequent sprawl by exposing people who live in the exurbs to the vibrancy of the inner city; increase production of food locally by showcasing examples of farms and vegetable gardens; showcase ways to turn abandoned city lots into productive spaces which remediate brownfields.
