the project

In time for Hispanic Heritage Month the Galilean Theological Center (GTC) proposes to organize, implement and launch the GTC Virtual Series On Substance Use Disorders.  The Galilean Theological Center (GTC) will develop and implement a culturally and linguistically virtual series on Substance Use Disorders through a variety of outreach endeavors to increase knowledge, awareness, and reduce the stigma associated with Substance Use Disorders and the impact that that the opioid epidemic crisis and COVID19 has had on the Hispanic/Latino Community. Also, through the GTC virtual substance use disorders series, individuals and families will have access to culturally and linguistically recovery programs.  Our goal is to reach 20 families and/or 125 individuals through 6-8 virtual seminars in the areas of: Substance Use Disorders, Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Relapse Prevention, Treatment, Co-Dependency, and Counseling.  The outcome objective is that by the end of the 6 weeks of virtual programming individuals and families will demonstrate an increased knowledge and awareness in the areas of Substance Use Disorders and will be able to combat social isolation while keeping and honoring physical distance as a means of a safety and healthy lifestyle throughout the COVID19 crisis.

Rev. Dr. Felix Muniz, President/Founder of the Galilean Theological Center and Pastor of Nueva Luz Community Church of the Nazarene, would be leading this project.  Dr. Muniz was addicted to cocaine, opioids and other drugs for over 25 years and was sentenced to a prison term 7 to 25 years for Drug Trafficking and Drug Addiction    As a recovering addict and after overcoming all barriers that can lead to self destructive behavior Dr. Muniz knows firsthand what it takes to over come Drug and lcohol Addiction specially during these unprecedented times of COVID19 where individuals and families are facing isolation, financial hardships, unemployment, hopelessness and powerlessness, all  which can lead to substance use disorders, relapse, and mental health disorders. the steps

The Galilean Theological Center has been in collaboration and in partnership with Nueva Luz Urban Resource Center, The Cleveland Clergy Alliance, and Ashland Theological Seminary throughout the years.  For more than 20 years Rev. Dr. Felix Muniz, Founder and Executive Director of GTC, has been successfully working at the intersections of education and recovery providing tools and access to resources to help individuals, families and organizations overcome barriers.  He leads a dedicated team of professionals with a common shared vision to uplift, empower, and help each person become a valued asset of the community. Dr. Felix Muniz has a unique understanding and capability of how to engage the Hispanic/Latino Community for inclusion to connect, thrive and flourish. In order to encourage and promote participation and meet the goals of the GTC Virtual Series On Substance Use Disorders, Dr. Muniz and his team will schedule and host meetings in Cuyahoga County with strategic faith partners at houses of worship, Community Centers, and Social Service agencies like Hispanic UMADAOP, Hispanic American Committee and Catholic Charities. We will also plan, schedule, host, and manage in-person and on-line, web-based community-based training that are open to the public and available for staff and volunteer professional development.   With the funds at hand GTC will:

  • Broadcast 12 sessions or seminars on Substance Use Disorders & Mental Health twice a week for 6 weeks, one during the day 10am-12:00pm and one during the evening from 7:00pm-9:00pm.
  • Contract professional staff with licensure to provide seminars on Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health, including Awareness and Education on Drug and Alcohol Addiction, Relapse Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery.
  • Create a pathway to develop virtual support groups
  • Provide Individual and Group Therapy

why we're doing it

At the end of the GTC Virtual Series on Substance Ue Disorders participants and families would have increased their knowledge and awareness on Substance Use Disorders including Relapse Prevention, Identifying Triggers, and Understanding the Disease Model of Addiction.  Individuals and Families will have access to support groups like AA, NA, HA, CA and Alanon. Participants will have acess to appropriate Treatment Programs, Individual and Group Therapy. These virtual series on substance use disorders will help delay the onset use of drug and alcohol during this COVID crisis.  Last but not least, at the end of the program we would have safe and healthier families and a healthy and safecommunity.
