the project
We have formed a working group to collectively gather funds and items to prepare and distribute care packages to Black Queer, Trans, NB, GNC, and cis-women compas who reside or have ties to the occupied lands known as El Paso/Cd. Juarez. We are also including comrades who are in ICE detention centers or incarcerated by the state.
There is a time to rest, to prepare, to act, and a place for ALL of us to care for each other. This past year many have responded in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and a powerful call to action from the Movement for Black Lives. We have witnessed yet again the power of community uprisings, despite the extremely violent reaction by the police state. Within the uprising, we also hear the voices of our Black Queer & Trans sisters who struggle and resist police violence, anti-black violence, transphobia, erasure, and isolation in our communities every day.
We stand in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives and their demands, and our project is a collective solidarity effort at the local level. We are thankful to those willing to join in this collaborative labor of resistance. Your offerings - whether they be small or large - will go a long way in creating care packages for our local Black compas.
the steps
The funds we raise will help us:
· Purchase self-care and healing items and services for 10 (or more) personalized care packages
· Compensate Black makers and business owners for their products and services
· Provide items and/or commissary funds for incarcerated people
· Support local Black compas in their journeys of healing and self-preservation
why we're doing it
We see this care package effort as a redistribution of resources to acquire, assemble and offer healing tools and self-preservation materials in this moment. In our various paths, we have come to realize that care work is an important part of solidarity work. We recognize that our comrades who are Black and especially Queer, Trans, NB, and GNC face greater risks and are harmed at alarming rates by the violent racist state in comparison to our non-Black comrades in the struggle.
We acknowledge that this care package effort is one small form of solidarity we are committing to. We are listening deeply, moving intentionally and taking action in authentic ways with hopes of building stronger community relations, while following Black leadership in preparing solidarity efforts at the national and local levels.
