Luther Gulick Park and Playground was a derelict misused space when Friends of Gulick Park was founded in 2009 to advocate for the creation of a greener, livelier, and safer park. Fast forward to Fall of 2020 when a completely redesigned and renovated park that reflected the needs and vision of the community was reopened.
A symbol of the journey is our ever popular annual pumpkin painting event that draws nearly 200 visitors. It is a family-friendly celebration that features arts, physical fitness, and park stewardship components.
We are reaching out to friends, family, and park lovers to help fund this Fall 2023 project.

why we're doing it
Friends of Gulick Park was founded to address the need to renovate a blighted and misused park that was designated among the 35 NYC parks at risk. The renovated park is now well used and a popular destination for community members of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic status. This crowd funding resource will enable us to continue to bring arts and stewardship programming to Gulick Park that will promote community engagement and cohesion in a safe green space.
ABOUT
From 2009 to 2018, Friends of Gulick Park partnered with neighborhood non-profit organizations to engage the community through visioning activities and workshops. Simultaneously, we used grant funds and private contributions for park clean ups and to plant in barren tree pits. Some of those plantings remain as a testament to the efforts of neighbors to make positive change in their community. Through lobbying elected officials we secured funding from Federal, State, and local governments that enabled a complete redesign and renovation of the park.
Our current goals are to partner with local non-profits to bring together a diverse and rich community through cultural, arts, environmental, and fitness programing and provide outreach and education about composting, recycling, and sustainable practices to encourage and support park stewardship to maintain a healthy park in the context of issues facing our city and the planet.
