the project

Corona Plaza - just off the #7 Train –sits in the heart of the diverse neighborhood of Corona, Queens, with 20,000+ people passing through each day. A true community gathering space, it is surrounded by small businesses and provides residents and families a place to relax, socialize, eat, and play.

Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) will be working with Neighborhood Plaza Partnership, Queens Museum, and Councilmember Julissa Ferreras to enhance the plaza experience with free Wi-Fi for one pilot year, starting in May.This service will increase internet access for the thousands of people for whom internet service remains unaffordable.

One important difference between this and other public Wi-Fi programs is that a specially designed splash page (the first thing users will see when signing in) will be created to highlight neighborhood events, community organizations, and local businesses. If successful, this type of community-oriented Wi-Fi can serve as a precedent for future similar programs.

We have most of the funding in hand for this service for one year.  Please help us fill our smaller funding gap in time for a May launch!

the steps

1) Free Wi-Fi installed.

2) A "splash page" will be created to connect users to the neighborhood. The page will be simple for use on mobile devices, with links to supporting businesses and partners.

3) Press Event is organized to announce the launch and to recognize all the partners that keep Corona Plaza a safe and vibrant place for everyone!

why we're doing it

Leveraging Corona Plaza as a community gathering space, free Wi-Fi will provide neighborhood residents and visitors with an important amenity which will improve access to the internet and highlight neighborhood events, community organizations, and local businesses.
