the project

My name is Sarah and I am a Senior in High School. I have been a Girl Scout for the last thirteen years, and I am currently working on my Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. This requires me to design and lead a community service project with a sustainable impact. For my Girl Scout Gold Award Project, I am starting a free theatre camp for kids ages 8-14 that will launch at the beginning of next summer.

At this camp, the children will participate in acting and technical workshops, play games, complete crafts, and put together small group skits that they will be able to perform for family and friends at the end of the week. The camp activities will be led by an array of volunteers, both experienced high schoolers and local actors. The kids will learn many different skills from movement and dance, to the importance of projection in public seaking, to improv. Theater campers will get an opportunity to look at scenes from iconic plays, and design thier own scenes in whatever style they'd like based around the theme of the camp week. The money raised through my ioby campaign will help make the experience FREE for all kids in attendence. It will cover transportation to and from camp, a daily lunch and snack, t-shirts for campers, as well as the costs of supplies and printing playbills for the final performances.

the steps

March and April- Purchase craft materials. and any other supplies needed by the kids to create their skits.

May/early June- Preordering supplies for the free lunch and snack for campers.  All Campers will also receive T-shirts

June- Five Days of Day Camp and an End of Week Performance.

why we're doing it

This project is very important to me. Acting and performing as well as the community provided by the theatre department at my high school have played a major role in the last several years of my life. I first got into performing at my elementary, but shorty after I graduated and moved on to high school, the music teacher retired and the theatre program there was discontinued.

I am aware that many elementary schools in my community also lack theatre and performance programs because they do not have the funding or volunteers willing to run them. It thus falls to the professional theatre companies to provide acting programs to young children and inspire them to continue with it into high school, however these programs are often very expensive. This is where my project comes in.

By providing all of the materials and meals needed to attend this camp for FREE, I am eliminating this issue. I believe performing and acting on stage is an important opportunity to give to kids at a young age because not only will it instill a passion for the arts in them at a young age, but it will also help them to become better at and more comfotable with public speaking; which is a great skill to have. It is my hope that the children who attend my camp will not only have an amazing experience, but will also learn about teamwork and that they will receive the knowledge that will encourage them to pursue acting in high school.
