About the project
As a part of the celebration of a major milestone, the 150th Anniversary of First Baptist Church, Lauderdale, in South Memphis, there will be an historical neighborhood mural painted on a vacant wall located on a building owned by the church. The mural will reflect the rich history of not only the church, but of the surrounding community. The entire neighborhood, the youth, young at heart, and everyone in between will be invited to participate in the fun, food, and fellowship ---and you are invited, too.
The Steps
We will secure an artist, choose a design, purchase all the supplies, and engage the neighorhood, especially the youth, in painting the wall. We will have food, music, and great fellowship.
Why we‘re doing it
Very few, including the residents who live in the community, are aware of its great history, especially the school students. We plan to use this mural as a teaching tool, that will help to instill pride in this underserved community. For many others, it will bring back happy memories. It is also on the route of the Heritage Trail, which will help attract tourists, also sharing with them, some of South Memphis.
