Steps in Flux is a community-based, collaborative mural project designed to encourage exercise and discovery while adding to the visual and cultural fabric of Pittsburgh’s Fineview neighborhood.
Leader
Brigette Davitt
Location
Biggs Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15214
Concept: Steps in Flux uses anamorphic typography (projected and painted so each word can only be properly seen and read from one particular vantage point) to encourage passers-by to travel to the top of the staircase and 'decode' the abstract shapes into their intended message. This message and its design are meant to encourage and inspire pedestrians while adding to the visual landscape and identity of Pittsburgh's Fineview neighborhood.
Installation is ongoing, 30% of the mural is complete and the remaining work will continue throughout September 2018 if enough funds are raised to cover the needed materials and supplies.
Steps in Flux is on it's way to completion! This Fineview/North Side mural is supported and approved by the City of Pittsburgh Art Commission and was awarded a Neighbor-to-Neighbor Sprout Fund grant ($1,000) that was spent on paint, technology for projection, and coatings to protect the final mural from weather and vandalism. We are in need of additional monetary support from the community to meet our October Fineview Step Challenge deadline. These funds will be utilized immediately to purchase additional paint and supplies (brushes, rollers, tape etc.) and two light blocking pop-up canopies. Due to adjacent street light pollution artwork projection is no longer visible, and this has halted installation. The addition of these canopies is integral to continuing installation. Upon mural completion all supplies, canopies will be donated to the Fineview Citizen's Council. This additional funding will alleviate the burden of the artist to pay for these expenses out-of-pocket and ensure that we can reach our deadline for the community to benefit from this artwork at the annual Step Challenge event on October 13th, 2018.
