Fineview Gateway Mural Progress

the project

Fineview is full of unique history, diverse and energetic people, and boasts some of the best scenic and skyline views our city has to offer. Our neighborhood deserves public artwork to illustrate and highlight our culture for the enjoyment of visitors and residents alike.

A team of local designers/artists/residents are proposing the creation of multiple public murals in the Northside’s Fineview neighborhood to celebrate the history, diversity and energy of our community.

Murals will be legally created on privately and publicly owned exterior walls to illustrate the diverse identity of Fineview’s past, present and future.

For this mural project, donations are being raised to fund paint, ladders/scaffolding/lift rental, and other common materials and supplies (brushes, paint sprayers, masks, tape, etc.).

Community events will be held for artists to hear the neighborhood's stories and ideas for possible translation into mural design proposals.

All donations are doubled while the One Northside matching grant lasts through ioby.org !

the steps

The project team is in the process of securing locations for exterior wall murals in strategic and visible areas on privately and publicly owned exterior walls. Locations will be announced once official permission has been granted. Professional artists/designers that reside in Fineview are donating their time to the creation and installation of these murals with the help of community volunteers. These murals will be planned and approved in Spring 2020 and painted in Summer 2020. The project team will raise the necessary funds throughout the community to make this proposed project a reality.

Funds raised for this project will be used exclusively to purchase materials to prepare wall surface, paint, equipment, supplies, and professional sealants to protect and preserve the artwork.

Community events will be held for artists to hear the neighborhood's stories and ideas for translation into mural proposals.

(For a breakdown of estimated mural costs, please see the Budget tab at the top of this page.)

why we're doing it

The proposed project will unite residents and artists to share their vision of the past, present, and future of the neighborhood while adding to the visual landscape and identity of Pittsburgh's Fineview/Northside neighborhood.

updates

Fineview Gateway Mural Progress

In August we began installation on a new gateway mural at Warren and Catoma Street that features large, sunset letters that will be surrounded by dimensional vines. Thanks to the community volunteers that participated in a number of afternoon paintng sessions this project is now about 50% complete and has added a bit of color to the neighborhood!

Chalk Talk: A Living Community Mural

The social distancing and stay-at-home orders in place across the globe as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have quieted our lives and halted our phyical interaction with friends, relatives and our community. As part of the Fineview mural projects I am creating and installing neighborhood chalk boxes in places where residents would previously congregate. This project, called Chalk Talk, is meant to encourage participants to write a message, draw a pictue, play a game or share a thought. This simple installation provides a personal outlet for creativity and a colorful way to communicate with others who visit the same location. Visit the Fineview Overlook to see and experience the first chalk box that was installed this week!

Fineview/Perry Hilltop Community Meetings 2/25 and 3/24 (Cancelled)

2/25 CITIZENS COUNCIL MEETING

The February Fineview + Perry Hilltop community meeting focused on developing creative approaches for making our nieghborhoods safer. I want to thank all of the residents and panel members there that evening for speaking from the heart about how violence, guns and drugs continue to affect our streets, our families and our homes. I spoke about the power of positive change through visual messaging, how a mural can transform a physical location, inspire a passer-by, or revitalize and rebrand the identity of an entire neighborhood. I'm so excited and invigorated by the energy and passion I felt in the room that night!

After the meeting, many residents took the time to check out the boards I created with a few initial Fineview locations, share thier ideas for mural concepts and messaging, and offer lots of connections and resources to keep things moving forward. Thank you all!

3/24 CITIZENS COUNCIL MEETING (Cancelled)

While we are all doing our part to protect each other and stay safe in the wake of the Corona Virus, I'll be continuing with my research and location scouting from home, as well as working on the first two large scale murals that have been approved in the Fineview/Sandstone Quarry community. Currently, I am researching the history of 3 ceramic relief plaques (1930'3 or 40's) that were affixed to the outside of the former Sandusky Court buildings (demolished in 2017) on the property. These are providing some inspiration and conceptual direction for the new Sandstone Quarry murals!

THANK YOU Northside Worldwide, Inc.!

We have reached our goal of $10,000, but the campaign remains open for one more day, and support continues to come in! Thank you to Northside Worlwide for taking us past our goal - our current funding will support materials, supplies (and some added technology with the extra donations) for the creation of over 3,000+ sq, ft of public murals!

WE'RE FULLY FUNDED! Announcing our first proposed mural locations!

THANK YOU to TREK Development Group for not only making a substantial contribution to our campaign to help us reach and surpass our goal, but also for thier enthusiam and collaboration with residents on the development of two murals being planned at the Sandstone Quarry Apartments—a mixed income housing community in Pittsburgh’s Fineview neighborhood.

Location 1: Tiered retaining wall situated directly behind Sandstone Quarry gateway signage, approx. 380 sq. ft.

Location 2: Retaining Wall/Rounded Brick Wall along Henderson Street, approx. 550 sq. ft. (City of Pittsburgh approval pending)

Thank you to the Fineview/Perry Hilltop Citizens Council for supporting this project!

We are excited to have official support from the Fineview and Perry Hilltop Citizens Council and look forward to working with them alongside neighborhood residents to identify locations, develop messaging/content and produce the final murals in 2020!
