the project

The warm, late summer breeze envelopes you, as the beat of the feet of the cultural dancers mimics that of your heart. With a handcrafted Storehouse Tea cocktail in one hand and a savory empanada in the other, you can rest easy knowing your indulgent night is benefitting a cause greater than yourself.

Fiesta de Té is an upbeat cultural celebration focusing on community, empowering small businesses, enjoying the cultural vibrancy of our city, and enjoying local foods and Organic, Fair Trade tea.

The purpose of Fiesta de Té is to enrich our local schools and communities by identifying a need and addressing it. This year, Fiesta de Té will be supporting not just one – but two local elementary schools. Fiesta de Té will support a community recreation area at Constellation Schools: Stockyard Community Elementary and provide bike racks for Clark Elementary School. A safe place to lock your bike and a basketball court are things people will often take for granted – however these schools currently are respectively without these amenities.

Because of the Stockyard Bike-a-thon, the majority of Clark Elementary students now have bicycles, and have been taught proper bike safety. However, students will be less likely to use these bicycles if there is nowhere to lock them up while they are in school.

In the heart of a city that breathes basketball, it is astonishing to find that a large number of our schools do not have basketball courts – or even a playground! When students are having recess in an empty parking lot, we are not maximizing the positive effects on their health – including benefits to their physical, emotional, and cognitive health. These benefits do not stop with the students – with full community access to this basketball court, the whole community will be reaping the benefits.

the steps

  • Create partnerships with Constellation Schools in Stockyard and Clark Elementary
  • Determine what programs the children want most
  • Crowdfund through ioby
  • Host Fiesta de Te celebration and fundraiser on August 24th, 2017
  • Gather students, parents and teachers to design backboard images
  • Paint the backboards of basketball hoops with the students
  • Install clean lines on one basketball court and four square court
  • Install new bicycle racks
  • Break in the basketball court with a tournament to kickoff the new school year!
  • Celebrate the new bicycle racks with a Bike-a-thon!

why we're doing it

This is a very important initiative, because a large percentage of American schools have recess in an empty parking lot. Recess and physical activity has been shown to statistically improve not only physical health, but also emotional and cognitive health. Providing a recreation area and an area to safety lock up bikes will not only benefit the students of this school, but also those of the surrounding community.
