About the project

The Windham Community Food Network has seen the effect of COVID-19 ripple through our food system and is reaching out to the community for help. We are raising funds to support both our food insecure community members and local restaurants/caterers. The funds will be used to purchase food from several small businesses in Willimantic to be given out at the First Baptist Church's free community dinners for those who need it.

The First Baptist Church offers meals five nights a week that are normally provided and prepared by volunteers from surrounding area churches. COVID-19 has left many of these churches closed and the First Baptist Church short on the volunteers and supplies needed to continue to provide the dinners. COVID-19 has also left so many of our local businesses struggling to survive on purely takeout. The Windham Community Food Network is facilitiating this project to support both of these pillars in our community. We want to keep people fed while keeping our small restaurants and caterers in business.

The Steps

We have contacted local area restuarants and caterers to create a schedule to cover the community meals that need support for the months of April and May.

Our initial partners include Taquitos, Blarneys, Not Only Juice and CLiCK but would love to collaborate with even more. If you know a business who would be interested in participating in our project please reach out to [email protected].

Why we‘re doing it

"Feeding the community. Feeding the economy" is allowing much needed community meals to continue in a safe manner at a time when social distancing is so important in fighting this pandemic. This project not only provides local businesses with much needed income but also allows for food to be prepared in an environment that limits the amount of volunteers normally needed to host these meals.
