the project

EVLovesNYC started at the beginning of the pandemic to tackle the rising levels of food insecurity in NYC. We are a heart-centered organization that delivers hot, healthy, nutritious meals to New Yorkers in need. We make food with a lot of love and care, believing that just because someone is experiencing food insecurity, it shouldn’t mean that the meals they receive are substandard. We serve chef quality meals through an army of volunteer chefs, plus 2000+ loving volunteers who donate their time to prepare, package, and distribute thoughtful menus each week. We cook meat based/ vegetarian/ vegan meals as well as meals that are culturally and religiously sensitive. So far we have fed over 350,000 people . And that number only continues to grow. We partner with 75+ organizations around the city to make sure that the food we make goes to those who need it most. In 2022, we raised some money to switch our plastic food containers to sturdy paper and compostible ones. One of our goals for 2023 is for our organization to become more environmentally sustainable and green and keep doing it.

the steps

We provide thousands of meals to 75+ organizations around the city and they deliver them to those who need them most. Due to container costs, we have had to use plastic in the past. We are switching our containers to compostable and paper ones. We have sourced affordable compostable containers and our aim is that most of our Spring and summer 2023 meals will be delivered in compostable containers. on top of that, we are going to collect whatever of the used ones we can and deliver them to compost centers.

why we're doing it

Our food is already low waste and environmentally friendly. We often repurpose food to reduce food waste and half of the meals on our menu each week are vegan. Our meals are also super efficient in that we make gourmet food on a tiny budget. Our chefs are volunteers so we keep down costs of every level. We want to make sure our food containers fit our ethics too, which is why we are aiming to switch to compostable. This makes a HUGE difference as we cook over 120,000 meals a year, so if you can support us to go green it will have a massive impact on our city and the wider world.
