About the project
Evergreen Lots is a community group formed in Bushwick, Brooklyn to facilitate access to unused, public lots.
EL Garden is the first vacant lot that Evergreen Lots has acquired. We leased it from NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development, through NYC Parks GreenThumb, in September 2013. The lot is located in Bushwick, a low-income, under-served neighborhood in Brooklyn with little access to affordable, fresh produce as well as community green space. The aim of building this community garden is to provide the community with a place where they can safely and productively gather, grow and receive fresh produce, participate in art and educational activities, and learn about growing and eating healthy food.
The Steps
Our garden needs lots of enthusiastic volunteers and helpful hands. We are planning on having different events to help build the things we need and get willing members of our community involved. Some of the steps we are planning to take are the following:
1. Bed building workshop - March 22, 2014
2. Compost bin and shed building workshop - March 30, 2014
3. Ordering soil for garden beds
4. Seed planting day - April 19, 2014
5. Ongoing maintenance through Fall 2014
Why we‘re doing it
Our vision is to create a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather, work together and foster a sense of community by growing and sharing healthy food.
