About the project

For the opening of our 2023-24 season, Ensemble Decipher will continue its principal mission of highlighting incredible compositional voices working with new and vintage technologies by premiering a new work by Bora Yoon commissioned by the ensemble featuring a giant, electronically interactive version of the classic string-based game cat's cradle. This evening-length concert will be held at Roulette in Brooklyn, New York on Monday, October 23, 2023. The concert will operate on a policy that no person will be turned away at the door, with an advanced ticket price of $20.

At this concert we also plan on presenting works that have grown out of interdisciplinary collaborations with other artists and technologists, including the New York premiere of new works commissioned from composer-performer Erin Rogers and Lyn Goeringer and an expanded version of our co-created dance work with Iranian-American choreographer Hiva Sedaghat, titled The Sound Sleep Has Been Shattered.

Why we‘re doing it

Ensemble Decipher strives to redefine performer virtuosity by drawing on the technological advancements of our time to highlight new voices and ways of listening. We also seek to reflect on and challenge the power structures that lace the field of electronic music by reexamining technology’s role in their performance practice. To do so, we consistently commission composers from historically marginalized backgrounds who engage deeply with questions relevant to our contemporary, technology-driven society. We believe the composers and artists on this concert reflect this mission well.
