Without a doubt, your contribution will make the difference. ELMHURST LITERARY MURAL, depicts the interpretation of five literary pieces of some of the great writers who have used New York City as the background of their most acclaimed literary stories.

The selection was no easy task. We are aware that this is only a small representation of the thousands and thousands of pages that New York and its five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Staten Island, inspire. The books and writer selected for this project are:The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger; The Invisible City, Pete Hamill; The Anthem, Sonia Sanchez; Latin Moon Over Manhattan, Jaime Manrique; and Spiks by Pedro Juan Soto. These represent the sociology of the times in which they were written and a complex iconography of their characters; archetypes, which allows participating artists to reformulate the intrahistory with creative solutions, to develop their own plastic discourse by uniting the history of the neighborhood and the cultural traditions proper of where the mural will be exhibited.

Artists participating in the mural: Anthony Andujar (Dominican / Puerto Rico), Diego Castillo (Dominican Republic), Laura Giron (Colombia), Stephanie Jimenez (Colombia), Santiago Lenis (Colombia), Natasha Ocoro (Colombia), Miriam Rodriguez (Puerto Rico), Dayana Sadova ( Kazakhstan), Andley Tyson (Jamaica) and Fei Yin (China). The selected artists were part of a call made in late October 2016 at La Guardia Community College.

Curators: Joyce Sanchez, Visual Arts Program Director; Arianne Fernandez, Art History Professor at La Guardia Community College.
