the project
Since the pandemic Pleasant Village Community Garden and several dedicated volunteers have been processing a massive increase in food scraps. Our old compost system has reached capacity. The diy construction is inefficient, falling apart and is compromised by rodent activity . We are raising funds so that we can build a double HOTBOX system which is a compost bin designed to add airflow and eliminate the need for extra manual labor. The bins will keep rodents at bay. The system will be more efficient and will provide relief for our hard working volunteers who add hundreds of pounds of food scraps to our compost production. Money from your donation will go directly towards funding our purchase order to the buy the materials, like recycled plastic lumber. This new system is extremely durable and safe for use against the elements and is expected to last for years to come.
the steps
Place purchase order for materials
When supplies arrive the creator of the Hotbox design and a group of young volunteers will come and assemble build the 2 bins.
Old compost bins will be transferred into the Hotbox system.
Continue processing local food scraps
why we're doing it
We are extremely motivated to continue our efforts. In nyc the reduction of food waste in our trash system is extremely important in fighting greenhouse gases The amount of organic waste from such a large city of people is only adding to the larger picture of global warming. Composting benefits everyone and everything by adding organic matter to the soil. This in return provides plants the nutrients it needs to grow. It also protects them from heavy metals and other soil born diseases that may exist in urban environments. With the city’s local foodscrap pick up service cancelled our garden has received an increase in food scraps which has our current system maxed out. We must continue doing our part in the fight to become carbon neutral and to do so it starts here for us. Our goal is to keep our garden as a 24/7 drop off location but to do so we need your help today.

This fundraiser enabled the garden to build (2) 4'x4'x4' and (1) brown materials bin. The construction and the increase in participation from the community and the members of the garden collected and processed over 7 tons food scraps since the time of this fundraiser! We appreciate everyone's donation in whatever form that came in. Our compost system reduces manual processing significantly which our volunteers appreciate in the winter months especially.
