the project
The East Buntyn Neighborhood experienced an increase in property theft and home invasions in November and December 2016. As a result, EBHDNA formed a Security Camera Committee to research options for creating a neighborhood-wide surveillance system. Phase 1 of the project included six months of research and testing led by Nick Gant, a former resident and owner of Gant Systems, a firm that specializes in managed IT, backup and cloud storage. We determined that our most cost-effective option is to create a closed surveillance network using Reolink cameras. Using leftover money from a previous grant, we set up two beta testing sites in the neighborhood.
Phase 2 of the project is underway and funded in part by a $2500 grant from the City of Memphis' Neighborhood Crime Prevention Grant. These funds will allow us to install twelve more cameras at six locations in East Buntyn. We are seeking to raise an additional $3700 to fund the remainder of the cameras.
the steps
Our plan is to install cameras at strategic locations throughout the neighborhood on neighbor's homes utilizing their electricity and WiFi. The Reolink cameras will be equipped with a 128-gigabyte micro-SD memory storage card and wirelessly upload the footage, which can be accessed remotely through a password protected website. Each location will have two cameras pointing in opposite directions to cover vehicular and pedestrian traffic going both ways. Once we have the funding, we will purchase the hardware and continue having our neighborhood volunteers install the cameras.
why we're doing it
The East Buntyn Neighborhood experienced an increase in property theft and home invasions in November and December 2016. As a result, EBHDNA formed a Security Camera Committee to research options for creating a neighborhood-wide surveillance system. After six months of research and testing led by Nick Gant, a former resident and owner of Gant Systems, a firm that specializes in managed IT, backup and cloud storage, we determined that our most cost-effective option is to create a closed surveillance network using Reolink cameras. We love our historic neighborhood, and we want to continue making it a vibrant and safe place to live.
