Groceries to 500 families+!

the project

We live in Ocean Hill Brownsville and there wasn't a mutual aid group for us. So we created one! A group of neighbors in Ocean Hill/Brownsville have come together to form a mutual aid network (now known as East Brooklyn Mutual Aid) to deliver free groceries to neighbors and their families affected by COVID-19.  It's a simple and effective neighborhood response to the need we see.  In our first week we delivered a week's worth of groceries to 41 families.  Two months later we've delivered groceries to 450 families. We have more need than money and volunteers. That's where you come in.

Mutual aid is solidarity, not charity - and we need everyone to make sure that we shift resources from those who have enough to those who don't. We've heard that there are some neighborhoods that have more money than need - and we are a neighborhood with more need than money.

Can you help? Donate or volunteer as a shopper or delivery person!

the steps

We've already begun! Our Neighborhood Association, Community Garden members, and other community members meet weekly by Zoom to discuss the needs we've seen in our neighborhood. We began to raise money as we can and shop with what we have. We're partnering with Crown Heights Mutual Aid, Bedstuy Strong, Brownsville Community Culinary Center, and other mutual aid and community groups to make sure we're focused, efficient, and coordinated.

We began delivering groceries on 4/21/20 and shop every day we have the funds to do so. We buy wholesale food in bulk and give our neighbors an inventory of food they can choose from when they order groceries. We then pack and deliver from a neighborhood warehouse. Each week we also deliver 60+ bags of staples to the Phoenix Community Garden Elder Box Program. We will continue until the COVID-19 crisis is over, or until we run out of money for groceries.

why we're doing it

Mutual aid means being in community with your neighbors and using the resources some have for those that don't have. We are a tight-knit community and we are used to doing for ourselves - East Brooklyn (Ocean Hill Brownsville) is often ignored in systemic responses to crisis. We do this because we live here, because we are a community, and because we're in it together.

Groceries to 500 families+!

All,

Thank you for your support! This week marks deliveries to 500+ families - 544 to be exact! That's more than 2,000 neighbors. In the past 8 weeks we've built a volunteer network of 40+ people. And most importantly we've created community at a time that we all needed it. Thanks for being a part of this.

Keep up with what we're doing - or join us! - through Facebook (Ocean Hill Brownsville Mutual Aid) and Instagram and Twitter (OHBMutualAid).
