What Is Mutual Aid:

Mutual Aid is a voluntary, community-led initiative for the exchange of resources and services for reciprocal, or mutual, benefits. It is an initiative that seeks to create a one-to-one community relationship system that provides adequate resources by offering services and logistic support.

Who We Are:

East Brooklyn Mutual Aid (EBMA) is an initiative led by ordinary people who are working to address food insecurity in Brooklyn's eastern neighborhoods. This group was organized to support those affected by COVID-19 by providing free groceries and some social support. EBMA’s leadership believes in supporting movements for food sovereignty and creating community-reliance.

What Make Us Different From Other Mutual Aids:

We strive to confront the issues of food insecurity along with our community members across several East Brooklyn neighborhoods; Brownsville, East New York, Cypress Hill, and Ocean Hill. We partner with local organizations that provide fresh produce and inspire positive action toward justice through food access. Part of our mission is to reduce food insecurity within our community through our grocery delivery program. We currently partner with Brooklyn Packers worker cooperative program, Black Radish to source low-cost groceries. This partnership enables us to provide more of our neighbors with free food delivery. In the future, EBMA aims to create partnerships with Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSAs), farm-shares, and local farmers; increasing the availability of healthy food options in our neighborhoods.

the steps

We've already begun! Our Neighborhood Association, Community Garden members, and other community members meet weekly by Zoom to discuss the needs we've seen in our neighborhood. We began to raise money as we can and shop with what we have. We're partnering with Crown Heights Mutual Aid, Bedstuy Strong, Brownsville Community Culinary Center, and other mutual aid and community groups to make sure we're focused, efficient, and coordinated.

We began delivering groceries on 4/21/20 and shop every day we have the funds to do so. We currently partner with Brooklyn Packers worker cooperative program, Black Radish to source low-cost groceries. This partnership enables us to provide more of our neighbors with free food delivery. In the future, EBMA aims to create partnerships with Community Supported Agriculture programs (CSAs), farm-shares, and local farmers; increasing the availability of healthy food options in our neighborhoods.

why we're doing it

Mutual aid means being in community with your neighbors and using the resources some have for those that don't have. We are a tight-knit community and we are used to doing for ourselves - East Brooklyn is often ignored in systemic responses to the crisis. We do this because we live here, because we are a community, and because we're in it together.

2020 was magical thanks to all of you!

Groceries to 500 families+!

All,

Thank you for your support! This week marks deliveries to 500+ families - 544 to be exact! That's more than 2,000 neighbors. In the past 8 weeks we've built a volunteer network of 40+ people. And most importantly we've created community at a time that we all needed it. Thanks for being a part of this.

Keep up with what we're doing - or join us! - through Facebook (Ocean Hill Brownsville Mutual Aid) and Instagram and Twitter (OHBMutualAid).
