the project
The E Warren Tool Library will be operated by Motor City Grounds Crew and powered by Restorin’ E Warren. The purpose of this project is to provide the greater eastside of Detroit with easy access to tools to work on their house, yard and/or community service project at a low cost. The library will be equipped with staff members and volunteers who will have the knowledge and skills to provide tool maintenance, safety training, and home repair classes. We are talking with other organizations (Michigan Historic Preservation Network, Brick and Beam) about setting up a workforce development program to give neighbors the opportunity to expand their skill set. We have a tool library location already identified (Morningside Neighborhood) with a launch date of Spring 2019.
the steps
We have acquired a building on E Warren and are working to fix it up and have it open and operational by April of 2019! once open we plan to start lending tools and hosting workshops as soon as possible!
why we're doing it
In 2017 Hammertime Hardware closed. The last hardware store in our community on E Warren and it has left a tremendous void on the corridor. We know a tool library won't replace the hardware store. However, we are hoping that creating a shared space to learn about tools and build community can help strengthen our housing stock, our relationships, and create a more connected neighborhood in our E Warren Communities.
