the project

This DJ 2 Work class will provide students the skills to pursue a career in the Disc Jockey field. The curriculum will include a brief history of DJing in the United States, mixing techniques, and basic audio engineering best practices.

As a Sacramento native, I have observed the need to provide enrichment for both youngsters and adults in our community. Several years ago, I started teaching DJ classes through Sacramento Parks and Recreation. One of my first students was a young boy named Giovanni, who became professionally known as DJ Gio with nationwide notoriety. DJ Gio was the victim of a senseless and violent crime. I decided to bring the DJ classes back in his honor. We also want to give recognition to another DJ named Reese Roundtree who was a prolific entertainer and amazing club DJ.

The proposed location for the classes is The Co-Op Spot at 317 12th St in Sacramento in a smart classroom environment. DJ consoles, and small PA systems are the current need for each student for in-class instruction and on the job training. Graduates will have the opportunity to choose to work at real events, on the radio, live streams, or behind the scenes.

the steps

  • Establish dates and times with the location proprietors to lock in availability
  • Create website www.dj2work.com with sign up form
  • start social media campaign
  • purchase equipment for DJ stations
  • communicate with possible industry brands for endorsements, equipment sponsorships, etc.
  • start testing in July (electrical, camera, smart class, auditorium, amenities, etc.)
  • launch first class in August

why we're doing it

As a Sacramento native, I have observed the need to provide enrichment for both youngsters and adults in our community. Several years ago, I started teaching DJ classes through Sacramento Parks and Recreation. One of my first students was a young boy named Giovanni, who became professionally known as DJ Gio with nationwide notoriety. Unfortunately, DJ Gio was killed because of a senseless and violent crime. I decided to bring the DJ classes back in his honor to mitigate such scenarios, and provide community members with a viable means of making a living as a business owner.
