Deutschtown City Steps Mosaic Mural
Our City Steps mural sits at an important intersection for several North Side communities plus North Hills commuters. We hope to improve the appearance of our neighborhood, and instill pride in our residents.

About the project
Our project entails covering the cement-block base of the City Steps at the corner of Itin and Concord Streets with a mosaic mural of approximately 120 square feet. The imagery would be relevant to the history of the neighborhood and coordinate with the completed mural nearby at Homer and Damas Streets on Spring Hill. We will involve the residents of the two adjacent communities in the creation of individual flowers. Most of the mural will be done by two professional artists, Linda Wallen and Amanda Wolf who worked on the Spring Hill mural.
The Steps
To complete our project we anticipate:
- Community workshop on June 13, 2015, allowing local residents to create flowers in glass mosaic or in clay.
- Work on mosaic, with volunteers, indoors on moveable substrates June through August 2015.
- September 2015 installation of mosaic onto City Steps.
Why we‘re doing it
The two neighborhoods involved were settled by German immigrants. These working-class neighborhoods have long suffered from neglect and could use some visually exciting artwork. By sprucing up this public area we hope to improve the quality of place and change how people see our neighborhood.
