the project
Bell Global Justice Institute will commemorate the 2016 International Day of the Girl Child at the University of Michigan Center in Detroit on Saturday, October 15, 2016. The International Day of the Girl Child (October 11) is set aside every year for global communities to raise awareness about the discrimination and human rights abuses that many girls face around the world. This is also a day to highlight the unique contributions of girls to make our world better. The very first U.N. observance of International Day of the Girl was held on October 11, 2012.
Here in Detroit, Bell Global Justice Institute will hold an event to commemorate International Day of the Girl. Our goal is to invite students, parents, educators, community leaders, nonprofits, and businesses across Detroit and the metro area to discuss the state of human rights for girls in Detroit and metro Detroit and around the world. We will have a local speaker focusing on girls' human rights in Detroit and the metro area, student speakers on their experiences growing up and attending school in Detroit, and a film viewing and discussion of "Girl Rising" a documentary on the stories of girls from several different countries. These stories will entail challenges and barriers girls around the world face in accessing their human right to education.
Our goal at Bell Global Justice Institute is to bridge the local and global experiences of girls to raise public awareness in Detroit communities about the state of human rights for girls everywhere, especially while seeking access to their education. Additionally, our goal is discuss an action plan to encourage participants to engage in advocacy efforts on behalf of girls in Detroit and the metro area and globally.
the steps
August-October – Market our event through our website, social media and other effective methods (flyer, post cards, invitations, etc.)
Late September: Pay for our reserved space at the University of Michigan Detroit Center
October: Order giveaway material and literature from United Nations Bookshop and other businesses that carry United Nations marketing material. Purchase gift cards as giveaways for students who participate in the discussion. Purchase food and beverages for participants.
After our event – we plan to write a blog post about our success to distribute widely. We also plan to continue communicating with participants to build relationships and potential partnerships to advocate for girls and for future projects.
why we're doing it
We are commemorating International Day of the Girl Child in Detroit as an effort to join the global conversation regarding the state of human rights for girls locally and globally and to highlight the unique contributions of girls in achieving gender equality, social and economic justice, and respect for human rights for girls everywhere.
