About the project
Detroit Audubon is currently working with classrooms and summer camps in the Metro Detroit area. We teach young people how to use binoculars, how to look for and identify birds, and most importantly, help students feel connected to the natural world. We need a spotting scope and child sized binoculars for school programs.
Currently, we have 12 office binoculars. This is not enough to take an entire classroom outside and bird watching. Our office binoculars are also large and heavy, which can make bird watching difficult and frustrating for younger children.
The Steps
We will ask our Members, Partners, and Friends to donate to help fund our goal.
We need binoculars and a spotting scope to help us work with more students! After reaching our goal, we will buy the materials and contact even more schools about scheduling bird walks in the Metro Detroit Area.
Why we‘re doing it
The Metro Detroit area is a great place for wildlife and bird watching. Detroit Audubon wants to reach the next generation of Conservationists and inspire them to protect the Natural World. Bird watching with binoculars is a fun and exciting new way for students to interact with Nature and feel more connected to it. Bird watching helps develop critical thinking skills and offers many possible connections to Science, Math, Literacy, and Art curriculums.
Detroit Audubon regularly visits classrooms for free and teaches students about birds and the natural world. Having binoculars would allow us to be more effective in our mission.
