About the project
The Denver Achievement Academy (DAA) is activating an alumni basketball team December 2016. Over the summer 20 plus alumni students attended a picnic and expressed interest in staying connected and participating in competitive basketball. Ten of the students met with a volunteer coach while the Founder, Mr. Simon Peter O’Hanlon recruited a location and a circuit of teams for our students to compete against. The rest is history! The games will begin early December. The project helps Inner City students, non-athlete types, remain engaged, physically active and involved during winter months. Our students recognize the importance of meaningful connections with peers who have graduated from the academic achievement program. The team offers continued support, mentoring and an extension of relationships developed when participating in the program. Coach Williams, a one-time board member of DAA, is prepared to coordinate efforts and coach alumni students/players throughout the season.
The Steps
DAA recently secured a location and partners with The Denver Athletic Club & the Vickers Boys and Girls Club. With a location secured, players and coaches committed, we need: funds for uniforms -- work out clothes, bags, appropriate footwear, physicals and bus passes.
Why we‘re doing it
By request of our Inner City students, non-athlete types, seeking engagement and physical activity. Our students recognize the importance of meaningful connections with peers who have graduated from the academic achievement program. The team offers continued support, mentoring and an extension of relationships developed when participating in the program.
