About the project

The Uhuru Dreamhouse aka Deep Space Craft, is a Black, trans led organization. It was created by Black trans people, the house is owned & maintained by Back trans people and it serves Black and indigenous trans people.

We build power and support for Black and indigenous tgnc artists and sex workers by providing a housing safety net for those who are actively experiencing emergencies due to systematic transphobia, anti-Blackness and discrimination.

The Uhuru Dreamhouse acts as transitional housing space as well as a creative sanctuary.

We provide private, safe, work space for Black trans people working in the creative arts / [adult] entertainment industry.

Our current goals are to equip ourselves to welcome the first official artist-in-residence, a legendary Black transwoman fashion designer. We want her to be uplifted and resourced when we bring her out to New Orleans. We want to create an ideal work/live environment for her to create a new fashion line and uplift our culture with her creations, for us by us.

The Steps

Some examples of our vision include;

Bodywork studio. The bodywork studio consists of an array of tools for many different forms of bodily care (solar lam, massage table, constraints, sensation tools and cupping).

Big Full Bellies. A night we want to breathe more life into after two successful meals. Our vision is for there to be monthly and if we get real good, weekly feasts and meals out of the Deep Space Craft. Every time new chefs with new flavors and stories to share about the meals. We often have or intentional meals with friends and community members as well as we support our Mothers food business, Bread and Bones and she supports us and all our community events , cooking for all of us and more.

Fitness Club. We have a bo flex revolution weight lifting machine and a working pedicure bath/massage chair. Both things are in need of some maintenance and activation. We want fitness club to be spa like and ableism/fatphobia/transphobia/gendered violence free zone.

Art therapy. We offer resources creative tools (paint, canvass etc.) as well as kind creative counsel to our community. One of us is a trained art therapist but not licensed. It is within vision that a resource be made either in the form of a video course, a zine, a book or all three to support art as healing in our community and bring together creative tools and resources to share as material for others to learn and heal with. Resources of this nature have been made and successfully disseminated before from the Deep Space Craft/Uhuru Dream House crew. We wanna do it again!

We want to have grief ceremonies for our community. It is a vision we have talked about with one of our Indigenous sisters. She would like to co create a space that is safe for people to come and grieve their loved ones who have transitioned from this plane. We would want to have plenty of candles, food, beverages and other ceremonial resources in abundance for said ceremonies.

Why we‘re doing it

Our organization is the beginnings of an abolitionist future for our community. We are laying down the foundation for housing justice for Black disabled trans people. Uhuru himself is the first example of a disabled Black trans person to receive housing Justice with the crowdfunded purchasing of the Dreamhouse. Next, Evol received housing justice as a disabled Black gnc person working as the co-director. As we continue on our journey we want to gain the resources and ability to lift up each Black disabled person in our community, each Black trans person, and help them secure housing autonomously.

What we have observed in doing the work and in providing transitional housing for folks is that we do need housing justice first and foremost in the Black tgnc community. Housing is a human right and Black trans people experience multiple barriers, obstacles and oppressions to prevent us from accessing our needs. We believe that people who are invested in the Dreamhouse and who see the success of that investment will be inspired to continue to uplift each Black tgnc person until we are all housed permanently. We work according to our indigenous and Black ancestral values as well as we honor the knowledge of native people from New Orleans.

Everything we practice is a manifestation of our imaginings and dreams of a Black tgnc decolonial abolitionist future.
