the project

Deconstructing DPD is the second compilation zine by Intersectional Press, After the successful launch of Deconstructing the Complex, on the nonprofit industrial complex, our next topic is the abolition of the Detroit Police Department and what we can build instead. Zine submissions will include all forms of self-expression - collage, essays, drawings, etc - and will center the experiences of folks most targeted by policing, surveillance, the criminal legal system, and the prison industrial complex.

To help gather submissions, we will host several zine making meets up throughout Detroit, providing supplies, food and drink, and community for folks to build together. Creators of submissions that are chosen for publication will be provided stipends for their work.

the steps

  • April - October: Call for submissions and zine meet ups
  • November: Curation, editing, and printing
  • December: Launch and distribution

why we're doing it

As an organization of police abolitionists, some of whom have been personally terrorized and brutalized by the Detroit Police Department, it only makes sense that Deconstructing DPD is our second compilation zine. In creating this, we will amplify the experiences and stories of fellow Detroiters and present alternatives to mass surveillance and incarceration that will actually keep our communities safe.
