About the project
NPI seeks to partner with a local artist to design a mural and paint the overpass pillars near the Decatur Street Tree Farm. The mural will welcome residents to the tree farm, a certified state arboretum, and transform the adjacent interstate wall into an inviting public art piece. The overpass pillars will be repainted to liven up the pedestrian walkway that bridges the interstate next to the arboretum.
The Steps
NPI will:
1. Commission a local artist to work with Carnes residents and arboretum volunteers on the design of the mural.
2. Purchase supplies and host volunteer events for the painting of the mural and interstate pillars.
3. Affix mural to a cedar rail fence if we cannot paint the interstate wall directly.
Why we‘re doing it
NPI is dedicated to reimagining vacant lots throughout Memphis neighborhoods as places of public art, urban agriculture, rest and relaxation, among other valued public places. We work alongside residents to think of possibilities and enact visions for underutilized lots near them. We think this mural will welcome Memphians to the site of the arboretum, creating an inviting and inclusive space for the neighborhood to enjoy.
