About the project
Connect 53212 aims to reduce drive-alone trips in Milwaukee’s Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods by increasing walking, biking, and bussing. We will provide interested residents with toolkits full of helpful resources including a neighborhood walking map to encourage a more active lifestyle. Outreach ambassadors will be reaching out to people door-to-door and having a conversation about how we get around. We want to let people know that most amenities are easily accessible by active forms of transportation. In addition to the toolkits, we will be organizing several themed bike rides and walking tours throughout the year. Each funder will receive a neighborhood map and walking tour map.
The Steps
The mapping project will start by gathering community input about all the points of interest. Then the Connect 53212 team will design walking routes that bridge the divide between the two neighborhoods as well as connect residents to some of the lesser known yet important amenities. We will then send data to our volunteer GIS specialist who will produce an easy to read neighborhood map. After sending maps to the printer we will be distributing them all to residents who return their mail order form. Outreach ambassadors will deliver the maps door-to-door and at community events until we've reached 5,000 residents.
Why we‘re doing it
This is an opportunity for residents to get a better idea of the amenities found in their local neighborhood. By becoming aware of all the amazing places that make Harambee and Riverwest unique places to live, people will be more likely to walk to their local shops or park or anywhere. This will in turn create more community by getting people who would otherwise not leave their house to go for a neighborhood stroll. Please make a minimum donation of $5 to our project.
