Why we‘re doing it
We want to educate Memphis residents on the importance of diverting compostable waste from the landfill; kitchen scraps make up about 25% of our trash and can't properly decompose when sealed in trashbags on landfills. Instead, it produces harmful toxins that contaminate earth and water. Kitchen composting is an easy and effective way to reduce your ecological footprint and required little effort, money, or space. Composted egg shells, fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds and filters, leaves and garden waste turns into valuable organic fertilizer that can be used for gardens, flower beds, and lawns.
